Grant funding: common pitfalls, priorities and crafting a persuasive narrative

Today, we held our first Funding Focus Hour event, a valuable resource exclusively for our Live Funding Database subscribers. It was a session filled with unique insights and valuable knowledge.

What went down?

Thanks to our guests, Georgia Bondy from Well Adapt and Niketa Sanderson-Gillard from Why Care, for sharing their personal and valuable experiences and strategies for securing grant funding and offering practical tips and actionable advice.

Here are some practical insights we gained about grant writing:

🤓 read what they're asking for and make sure what you're writing answers that - you want to make it easy for people to see that you've ticked all of the boxes regarding applicant requirements.
🪞 use the same language they've used.
🔁 don't be afraid of repeating yourself - sometimes they score each answer separately, so ensure you answer each question in full.
💎 think your project plan through really well and articulate it as clearly as you can
🔋 don't try and pigeonhole yourself; save your energy and apply only to what fits your project or organisation.
🤖 yes, Chat GPT can be handy for grant writing, but you have to be very specific with prompts, and don't rely on it for anything close to a final version.
🍀 lots of grant applications are based on luck and the assessor's interests - many things go on behind the scenes, and things we can't control, but all we can do is try our best.
